East Bay Eats – Rainbow Community Center at Popoca

February 23, 2020 By Mike Sarcona

East Bay Eats brings community together to raise money for different non-profit organizations working in the East Bay (and SF!). Every other month – with pop ups in between – we host a family-style, community dinner at some of the Bay’s most beloved restaurants. To date, our work has raised over $300K for a variety of amazing organizations.

Join us February 23rd at new Oakland pop-up Popoca to support the incredible work of Rainbow Community Center of Contra Costa County, which provides a safe and welcoming place and builds community among LGBTQ+ persons and our allies. Rainbow provides a wide array of wellbeing services for LGBTQ+ individuals of all ages clinical and case management services, peer-based support groups, senior services and lunches, a food pantry, HIV testing, diversity training, and youth programs. (https://www.rainbowcc.org)

After building a career in fine-dining kitchens around the greater Bay Area, Chef Anthony Salguero is realizing his dream of sharing Salvadorian food with his home community in Oakland. Popoca offers dishes – like pupusas and tamales made with seasonal ingredients and fresh-milled masa – inspired by traditional Salvadorian wood-fire cooking and recipes. (https://www.popocaoakland.com)

Representatives from Rainbow will share information about their work, and we will be raising additional funds at the event for the organization. A signature cocktail may be ordered throughout the night at the cash bar – 100% of the proceeds will also be donated to the organization.

Tickets cost $60-100 per person, wine included, for a multicourse, prix-fixe meal.

8:00pm-10:00pm 2nd Seating

Queer Prisoner’s Art Show with ABO Comix

January 3, 2020 By Mike Sarcona

www.abocomix.com

This January, Classic Cars West Gallery is honored to host the prison abolitionist collective ABO Comix for their first ever art show featuring the work of over 50 queer artists in prison.

Following the release of their third anthology in December 2019, ABO Comix will share original art, comics and sketches gathered over the past two years, with an opening reception on January 3rd during the First Fridays & Oakland Art Murmur street festival.

At the opening reception, Anti-Repression Music will perform songs penned by jailhouse lyricists, with letter-writing workshops and a raffle for some of ABO’s prized publications throughout the night.

The closing reception on January 18th will offer more prison abolition resources and workshops, and the chance to support ABO Collective’s growing network of artists. All works will be for sale, with 100% of ABO’s profits going back to support the artists.
